NIFT Entrance Exam Pattern
The NIFT entrance examination runs in two stages. A clear understanding of both is essential
for effective preparation.
Stage 1 — Written Exam
(same date for UG and PG)
- CAT (Creative Ability Test): Tests creativity, observation, design
ability, drawing, and colour sense. Subjective/drawing-based.
- GAT (General Ability Test): Tests quantitative ability,
communication skills, English, analytical ability, general knowledge, and case
studies. Objective type.
Stage 2 — Based on
Program
- B.Des / B.F.Tech: Situation Test — a hands-on practical round where
candidates build a 3D model from a given theme using provided materials, then
explain the concept.
- M.Des / M.F.M / M.F.Tech: Group Discussion (GD) and Personal
Interview (PI) — assess design thinking, communication, subject knowledge, and
personality.
Inside the Situation Test:
How the 2 Hours Break Down
- First 5 minutes: Read the problem statement and brainstorm ideas.
- Next 15 minutes: Sketch a rough design.
- Next 60 minutes: Build the model step by step.
- Final 30 minutes: Refine, clean up, and write the concept
explanation.
Techniques Worth Drilling
for the Situation Test
- Paper folding & origami: for lightweight, intricate forms.
- Wire structuring: for abstract figures and frameworks.
- Clay modelling: for three-dimensional creativity.
- Thermocol & foam board work: for architectural and
product-style forms.

For the Situation
Test Specifically
NIFT supplies all materials at the Situation Test centre — candidates can't bring their
own. The kit provided is close to: mount board, one neutral chart paper, two to three
colour sheets, glue, a cutter, and thread. Rehearsing with a similar, familiar kit at
home matters more than owning every material under the sun. Delhi NCR students have it
easiest — most of this is available off-the-shelf in Sadar Bazaar.
About the Final NIFT Result
Final NIFT merit combines your Stage 1 written score (CAT + GAT) with your Stage 2 score —
Situation Test for B.Des, or GD/PI for PG programs — declared on the official NTA NIFT
portal. A strong written rank can still slip if Stage 2 is under-prepared, which is why BRDS
coaching covers both stages, not just the written exam.
BRDS Success Story
BRDS has consistently produced outstanding results in NIFT admissions. With 2,393
students selected in NIFT 2026 — including 85 in the Top 100 — and a total
of 16,780 NIFT selections since 2005, BRDS remains India's highest
result-producing coaching institute for NIFT. Structured coaching, expert NIFT alumni
faculty, and hands-on practice have helped thousands of students convert a strong
written score into a final seat.
